Being ever so curious, I've been learning quite a bit about the Local Group Policy Editor functions in Windows 10.
And here's something that really grabbed my interest: the Control Panel.
What could I do with it to enhance my use of Windows 10?
Definition Right from Google:
"The Control Panel is a part the Microsoft Windows, in older versions, which allows users to view and manipulate
basic system settings and controls via applets, such as adding hardware, adding and removing software,
controlling user accounts, and changing accessibility options."
To get started, we first have to do a couple of things:
How to Open Control Panel Icons View
a). Click on START button on Taskbar.
b). Scroll down Apps, which are in alphabetical order, to Windows System and click on it.
c). Select Control Panel and click on it to open it
NOTE: I used this example to open the Control Panel for demonstration. Feel free to open it by another means if you wish.
d). In upper right corner Of the Control Panel page, click on View by dropdown and select either Small icons or Large icons view.
e). Keeping Control Panel Window open, minimize it to Taskbar
How To Open Local Group Policy Editor Using Run
a). Open Run [WIN] + R
b). Type: gpedit.msc in Run, and click/tap on OK.
NOTE: I used this example for demonstration. Feel free to open Local Group Policy Editor by another means if you wish.
Now we can start.
To Show Only Specified Control Panel Items Using the Local Group Policy Editor
NOTE: The Local Group Policy Editor is only available in the Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions.
1. Open the all users, specific users or groups, or all users except administrators Local Group Policy Editor for how you want this policy applied.
2. In the Left pane of the Local Group Policy Editor, click/tap on to expand User Configuration >>> Administrative Templates >>> Control Panel
3. In the Right pane of Control Panel, double click/tap on Show only specified Control Panel items to edit it. This will open the Show on specified Control Panel items window.
4. Do step 5 (show) OR step 6 (undo) below for what you would like to do.
5. To show Only Specified Control Panel Items
A) Select (dot) Enabled, and click/tap on the Show button under "Options". This will open the Show Contents Window
B) Enter the name of any of the Control Panel items one per line, you want to show, and click/tap on OK when finished.
NOTE: You would enter the EXACT same names as the items in the Control Panel (icons view).
C) Click/tap on OK to apply
NOTE: If the Control Panel is currently open, then close and reopen it to apply.
You will now see only those items you chose, within the Control Panel.
6. To No Longer Show Only Specified Control Panel Items
==>> Open Local Group Policy Editor then follow above steps 1 thru 3.
A) Select (dot) either Not Configured or Disabled, click/tap on OK
NOTE: Not Configured is the default setting.
B) Close then re-open the Control Panel to apply changes, you will see the Control Panel Items fully restored.
7. When finished, you can close the Local Group Policy Editor if you like.
I really like this procedure. It let's me create my own little Control Panel items list. While I'm sure I'll place required items in my Control Panel items listing,
I'll also be taking a closer look at just what I won't need. There's quite a lot of user power with the Local Group Policy Editor.
Feel free to try this out some and see what configurations you come up with.
