HOW TO VIRUS SCAN YOUR UPLOAD

This guide is intended to help you decide which files need to be virus checked, and how to check them.

The prefered way to check for viruses is to use the online service VirusTotal. This is because VirusTotal checks each file with many different anti-virus apps.
Also, for people with a VirusTotal account, it gives lots of useful information about the scanned files.

1. THE EASY SOLUTION - RECOMMENDED FOR MOST MEMBERS
If you are a Registered member or a Verified member then this section is for you.

If your upload is single file then upload it to VirusTotal. Then include the link to the scan result in your post.
If your upload is too big for VirusTotal then see "LARGE FILES" below.
If your upload is an ISO file then see "ISO FILES" below.
If your upload is an archive (zip, rar, 7z etc) that includes an ISO file then see "ISO FILES" below.

2. LARGE FILES AND MULTI FILE UPLOADS
If you need to check a file that is too big for VirusTotal then use whatever anti-virus app you have installed on your PC or laptop.
If you have many files to scan then it will be more convenient to use your local anti-virus app.
If you use your local anti-virus app then scan everything in your upload.
Start by extracting everything to a folder and then virus check the whole folder, including sub folders.
Include the scan results in your post as described in "SHOWING LOCAL ANTI-VIRUS SCAN RESULTS" below.

3. ISO FILES
If your upload is an ISO file then do not use VirusTotal. VirusTotal does not scan inside ISO files.
If your upload includes an ISO file inside an archive (zip, rar, 7z etc) then do not use VirusTotal.
Check your ISO using whatever anti-virus app you have installed on your PC or laptop, like this:
* Mount or extract the ISO.
* Scan the entire mounted volume with your usual installed anti-virus app.
* Include the scan results in your post as described in "SHOWING LOCAL ANTI-VIRUS SCAN RESULTS" below.

4. SHOWING LOCAL ANTI-VIRUS SCAN RESULTS
Unfortunately many anti-virus apps do not show filenames in the scan result so, in your thread description, describe what checking you did like this

* If you get no warnings say something like this:
"All files scanned with Avast and Kaspersky. No problems found."
Also post an image of the scan result message.

* If you get warnings then say something like:
"All files scanned with Avast and Kaspersky.
Warnings received for
login.dll
fix.exe"
Also post images of the warnings.

5. THE COMPLICATED SOLUTION - ONLY FOR EXPERIENCED UPLOADERS
If you have Uploader rank, then this section is for you.
If you are staff, or are one of our OS builders then, then you probably don't need this section.

Experienced uploaders may prefer to scan just the files that are likely to contain malware.
This might be the most practical approach for very large uploads or if you are uploading an OS.

KEYGENS, Medicines ETC
The most likely place to find a virus in your upload is in the Medicines so
* If you have a folder named "Medicines", "Medicines", "fix" or something similar then scan every file in it.
* If you have individual files with names like "Medicines", "Medicines", "fix" then scan them. Usually these will be .exe or .dll files, but not always.
* Upload each file than needs to be scanned to VirusTotal.
* For each file, save the URL of the scan result and include it in your post.

SETUP FILES
If the file that you run to start the installation has been changed then you must scan it.
The installation file is usually, but not always, an exe file. It is often called "setup" although it may have the same name as your app, or something similar.
A good way to check if a file has been modified is to look at its digital signature. Do it like this:
* In explorer, right click the file to check and select "Properties".
* If there is a "Digital Signatures" tab then click it.
* For each item in the list of signatures, select it and click "Details".
* If you see "This digital signature is OK" then the file has not been changed and there is no need to virus check it.
* If you see any other message then you must virus check the file.
* Upload each file than needs to be checked to VirusTotal.
* For each file, save the URL of the scan result and include it in your post.
* If you do not see a "Digital Signatures" tab, and you do not know the complete history of the file, then virus check it.

Effective 16th December 2022, ClamWin is no longer an acceptable virus scanner for new uploads.

Why??
Because they probably know everything I say already.
I didn't want the site's most competent and experienced members to think that I was preaching to them.
