@Crash_king thanks for the tips!

And also a reminder for those of us who love to download everything (torrents and software):
The hard-drive fills up really quick when we're addicted to downloads, especially large gigabytes of files. lol

Keep an eye out on your hard-drive... as soon as it reaches its disc quota**
that is when your system starts to run really really slow.
Move your downloads to another drive or burn them to blank data DVDs.

**Disc Quota sets a limit so that some Free disc space may be used for virtual memory.
Without enough empty disc space for virtual memory, programs will crash more often
or not run at all and some custom user settings may not function... this is to compensate
for the performance of the machine.

The disc quota is user-configured in 9xx OSes up to XP,
and it is accessed by rightclicking C: > Properties > Quota tab.

I don't know if the OSes from Win 7 and up also have this Disc Quota feature.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's a few of my personal routines:

If I download a software that came Compressed inside a zip or a rar folder,
I unpack it and delete the compressed version.
It makes no sense for me to keep the compressed folder and the unpacked on the same drive,
as that would only take up more drive space... especially if the downloaded item is something
large such as an OS, or a movie, or a software....

...I also set my recycling bins for Permanent Delete without Confirmation, which means
that I delete the file without sending it to the Recycle bin.
...because I've already copied it to another disk and I know I will no longer need a file....

...After I've deleted the file permanently, I run the File Swipe tool (from Revo Uninstaller)
which is a government-standard swipe that will permanently remove the deleted file
from the hard-drive by re-writing over the data space with zeros, thus making it
impossible to recover the deleted data....
After that is done, I run the disc defrag, and then I restart my machine.

I do a basic disc defrag almost every other one or two nights while I'm at work.
And I do my deep cleaning routine once every week or two.

Until I get a new monitor for my tower, my laptop is my active "desktop" machine for now.
I have it on 24-6 night and day, and on the seventh day I shut it off to cool it down thoroughly.

-------------------------------------------------

Users of OSes Win7 and up:
You can use a blank 4gb USB drive as a memory booster to speed up
your machine's virtual RAM.
This method is called "ReadyBoost"...

Hope these tips help. :)

Someone asked me why I set my Recycle bin to 'permanent delete',
so, here's the reason why I did that:

Files, Videos, Software, Music, saved Program Projects and their source files
for those projects, Archived Email/Chat/Forum messages, you name it- I save it...
...I'm a pack-rat when it comes to saving files of things I think I will "need" or use
anytime sooner or later.

"Think", "Need", and "Anytime Sooner or Later" are the symptoms leading to
slower machines and system crashes.
The more we Think we'll Need our saved files Anytime Sooner Or Later, the slower
and more unstable our desktop and laptop (and tablet) machines become.

I collect e-things and it's hard for me to let go of them when I really no longer need them.
I move them from drive to drive, but they're still there taking up space in my drives.

I use several external hard-drives for storage, and also as Installation folders
for installing programs (rather than C:/Program Files.... I install in external drive J or K whatever)
and running them from other drives.

------------------------------------------------

Guess what: all that information and run activity from these files get stashed inside the folders
which Crash King listed in his first post.

That Prefetch folder and the two Temp folders (the regular temp, and the %temp%) are the ones
to really keep an eye on, because they store files and cookies with every click of your mouse
and keyboard online and offline.
Those folders GROW and some files won't delete because the system is still using them in a background,
and Task Manager doesn't always tell you what programs or system resources are using that file.

Close all running programs including torrent clients, and then you may proceed to clean
and delete files from the Prefetch and the two temp folders.
When you open these two folders, sometimes you must delete files one by one or in
small group selections.
If you Select All, there's always that one file which is still in use by the system and the
Delete process will get aborted and you'll still be stuck with all the other files as well.

Prefetch and the Temp and %temp% folders:
I arrange the icons in List or Detail view, and start deleting.
I write down the name of the file which could not be deleted, and I continue deleting
all of the other files listed before it.
Delete in small selected groups of files until the folder is empty or has just a few undeletable
files remaining.
Those remaining files usually delete on their own after a process no longer uses them.

------------------------------------------------------

I've got hundreds of gigabytes worth of data and media saved on data DVDs and piling up in spools
collecting dust because I "think" I won't need them until later on "whenever".
When I really do need a specific file I can locate it by exact date/time that it was saved in
the exact data disc (I label all of my data DVDs and their contents); but the work is Finding it.

I've got saved files and graphics dating as far back as 2002, and I still use them once in a while.
If I don't back them up on a CD or data DVD disc, I must delete them.
If I place them in the Recycle bin, the confirmation dialog will make me think twice
or feel guilty about deleting the file and I end up keeping the file again.

When it's time to clean my system, I want to Delete files I No Longer Need.
I do not wanna feel regret or guilt about deleting a file. If I need it I will create a new file.
I want to Delete without any second thoughts..... Delete to clean up disc space..... No Recovery.
No Remorse, No Regrets, and no more stacks of dusty data DVDs in spools.

...that is why I set my Recycling bin to permanently delete the file from its folder location...
Instead of sending a file to the recycle bin, I permanently delete it from its folder location.
Confirmation dialogs and "Are You Sure" messages disabled, I just click once and the file is GONE.
If I still use the file I move it to another drive or data disc.
If I am Certain that I'm not gonna use the file anymore, I just wanna click Delete one time so it is GONE.
Do not use this method unless you are completely sure you will delete a file you no longer need.

Feng Shui is the martial art form of Cleansing.... getting rid of junk and restoring balance and purity.
Computers need some Feng Shui love, too.
Cleaning a system is more important than babysitting saved junk files.
Deleting those junk files is a Discipline all by itself! :D
