Tech News Warning for Google Chrome users

New types of cyber attacks - Google users receive misleading Chrome update error message sent by scammers to distribute malware

The said threat starts after users visit a "compromised" website that is infected with malicious code. When a person visits these sites, a fake error message will appear in Google Chrome, urging them to immediately download an update that will supposedly fix the security issue. When users click on that link, they end up downloading a ZIP file containing a Monero miner that will use their computer's processing power to mine the cryptocurrency for the attackers.

Thanks @Cyler and @Elzer , I once had to remove Chrome completely with Revo Uninstaller and re-install. Running Malwarebytes every so often helps as it detects and removes all the mining bots.

I saw this type of scams from 15 years ago, no matter if using IE, Firefox, Chrome. I think at least all the big browsers are targeted. The solution is simple: 1. Think before entering an unknows site 2. Use only addons you trust and need 3. Update using the update function of the browser or official site, never other sources. You can also use trusted download sites like CNET or Softpedia. I also use winget command and PatchMyPC app for updating 4. Use an adblocker - prefer AdGuard and HostsMan. 5. Use a trusted DNS 6. Use an AV 7. Make backups at least monthly.
