Wow!! Finally, 50 years later, Windows has the "Always on Top" feature. Maybe just for the calculator - but WOW! Having a window NOT DISAPPEAR is so fundamental to all kinds of tasks. Thanks for this savory bit of spit Microsoft.
If this paltry tidbit is not enough, did you know that, by PUSHING ONE BUTTON, you can toggle the state of ANY WINDOW to "AlwaysOnTop" or normal?
Here's the code to do that, but be warned, you have to be a genius developer at Microsoft to write this kind of code:
F7::
#Persistent
WinSet, AlwaysOnTop, Toggle, %Calc%
return
Or maybe anyone can do it!
It's really just ONE LINE: WinSet, AlwaysOnTop, Toggle, %Window Title%
All it takes is installing the 2mb open source miracle called AUTOHOTKEY. Then put the code above into a file named something like "AlwaysOnTop.ahk" Double click that file and it will be running!
Now when you press F7 (or ANY KEY you choose) the window in focus will NEVER go away, until you press F7 again.
I have my F1 key bring up a menu of hundreds of little scripts much cooler than this which I've written that have saved me a thousand hours of life! I use the AlwaysonTop in my recording studio when my vocalist Gain Volume cannot go away no matter what other windows are clicked, if I have a singer with a GIANT dynamic range but they insist on a delicate ribbon mic. One of the BEST SCRIPTS that save great headache is the "CountOpenandClosedDivs" which, if you program web pages with html, and you have thousands of lines - YOU NEED TO KNOW IF YOU'VE CLOSED all your div tags!
And the AutoHotkey forum is simply great: People LOVE to help you automate stuff. If you ever want to automate something, seek on their forum and Ye Shall Find!
Then: try not to go crazy once you realize:
You can do ANYTHING with AUTOHOTKEY
Below is a small idea of the kinds of things you can do with AutoHotKey. This is the menu of scripts that pops up when I hit my F1 key. The Text Manipulation submenu alone saves me oodles of typing when I'm writing.
